Ekiti Speaker, Oluwawole condemns invasion of Senate, stealing of mace

The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Right Honourable (Pastor) Kola Oluwawole has described the invasion of the Senate chamber and theft of the symbol of authority, the mace, as the height of desecration of democracy in the tenure of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

Oluwawole, reacting to the alleged invasion by APC Senator, Omo Agege on Wednesday, in a statement by his Special Assistant (Media), Stephen Gbadamosi, described the action as similar to the APC-aided invasion of the Ekiti State House of Assembly some months ago.

The Speaker said, “this kind of happening rubbishes the gains we have made in entrenching democracy. The legislature is a department that is so germane to the growth of democracy. While the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has always strive to strengthen that institution, the reverse has always been the case under the APC-led Federal Government. Why?

“Under this very dispensation, we experienced a similar situation when agents of the Federal Government invaded our hallowed chamber and carted away one of our members. It is like they have graduated now and are doing the same at the national level.”

“This portends grave danger for Nigeria. If your party wants to give us a change, good. But is it this kind of change to the worst that we deserve?“, Oluwawole queried.

The Speaker charged the President, General Muhammadu Buhari, leaders of the APC and other stakeholders in the government of the APC not to plunge the country into an unprecedented crisis by undermining the institutions of democracy, they, the PDP had nurtured since the advent of democracy.

He also urged leaders of the PDP, particularly, the Chairman of its Governors forum, Ayo Fayose, his counterpart in the APC, Abdulazeez Yari, religious leaders and “other lovers of this country” to prevail on the APC not to plunge the country “into another truncation of democracy.”
