The Delta State House of Assembly has taken steps to end what it described as “property development fraud” and exploitation to Deltans, saying that bill to regulate the process would soon be passed.
Mr. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Speaker of the House who spoke to DAILY POST in Asaba on Wednesday, disclosed that the Delta State Property Development, and Real Estate Regulation bill before the House, when passed, would bar property developers from exploiting Deltans, adding that the bill will also advance housing stock in the state.
He said: “The bill which has passed second reading was meticulously debated, and agreed that it will help to regulate the trend that had portended litany of frauds in the recent times.”
However, at the floor of the House on Tuesday, a motion moved by the lead sponsor, Orezi Esoevo, member representing Isoko South Constituency, averred that the provisions of the 1999 constitution allows every Nigerian the right to own property, both movable and immovable anywhere in Nigeria.
According to her, the bill seeks to ensure that Deltans get their fair share in housing schemes, adding that it will promote, and advance housing stock in the state.
The lawmaker submitted that the bill will promote affordable and decent housing, eliminate shuns, promote diversity of neighbours and housing opportunity for Urban renewal. She said: “it will attract investors to Delta State on housing capacity and industrial development”.
But in the past four years, Deltas have been developed in the hue and cry of “housing development fraud” by Property Development and Real Estate Managers, and had petitioned the State Assembly to come to their aid.
Supporting the motion by the lawmaker representing Isoko South, the member representing Oshimili North Constituency, Pat Ajudua, stated that major problem facing the working class in the state, had been accommodation, stressing the bill seeks to repeal the existing bill, and to guide property developers in the state, she said: “the state stands to benefit a lot from the quick passage of the bill as it bars property developers from taking advantage of the low income earners in Delta State”.
Other members of the House who spoke in the same vain included, Reuben Izeze, Efe Ofoburuku, Emeka Elekeokwuri, Daniel Yingi, Oboro Preyor, Erhiatiake Ibori-Suonu among others who unanimously averred that the bill was timely, and viable to housing, and property management in the state.
They, however, appealed to the House to give speedy consideration to the bill which they described as all important.
