Champions League: Roma president punished for celebrations after Barcelona win

Roma president, James Pallotta, has agreed to pay a fine and apologised to Mayor Virginia Raggi on Wednesday, after jumping into a downtown fountain to celebrate the 3-0 win over Barcelona.

Palotta, who was surrounded by a crowd of estatic fans, performed a backward somersault into a fountain in the Piazza del Popolo.

Roma’s 3-0 victory on Tuesday, ensured they overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit in the Champions League quarter-finals and qualify on away goals rule.

City ordinances call for a €500 fine for wading into historic fountains.

“We spoke and he apologised,” Raggi said.

“He did it in a moment of excitement but he realises the importance of the example he needs to provide. And clearly he’ll pay the fine.”
