Lionel Messi scored the first hat-trick in the Champions League season, as Barcelona defeated PSV 4-0 at Nou Camp.

The Barca captain opened scoring in the first half, with a typically brilliant free-kick, before Ousmane Dembele made it 2-0 in the 75th minute.

Messi added two more goals in between a Samuel Umtiti red card, as the LaLiga champions began their campaign in Europe on a fine note.

Later in the evening, Liverpool edged a thrilling contest against Paris Saint-Germain 3-2.

The Reds went two goals up, thanks to Daniel Sturridge and james Milner. But PSG equalized through Thomas Meunier and Kylian Mbappe.
