Cannes Film Festival: South Korean dark comedy Parasite wins coveted Palme d’Or

South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy Parasite has won the coveted Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

Parasite is the first Korean film to win the prize, although Bong first made his mark at the festival in 2017 with the Netflix-produced Okja.

The film follows a man and his unemployed family who trick a wealthier family into giving them jobs as a way to embed themselves in the other family’s lives – before things start going wrong.

Emily Beecham and Antonio Banderas won the acting prizes

British actress Emily Beecham won the best actress prize for her starring role in Jessica Hausner’s Little Joe.

Spanish star Antonio Banderas won the male acting prize after playing a tortured filmmaker in Pedro Almodovar’s loosely biographical Pain And Glory.

The Dardenne brothers shared the best director award for their film Le Jeune Ahmed (Young Ahmed) about a young Belgian boy who plans to murder his teacher.
