Tuchel believes it is not only because Jorginho has won the Champions League with Chelsea and the European Championships with Italy over the last year, but also because he is a very intelligent player.
Jorginho won the Champions League with Chelsea at the end of May, before playing a pivotal role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph.
The 29-year-old was among the 30 players shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or on Friday.
Jorginho is expected to rival Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe for the Ballon d’ Or.
“Jorginho deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” Tuchel said during an appearance at the annual Sports Festival in the Italian city of Trento, according to Football Italia.
“He’s a very intelligent player and it is a pleasure to be his coach.”
“He has a great vision of football,” Tuchel added.
“For me, individual prizes don’t have great significance, it is impossible to make a real comparison between several players of different roles.
“I would like one of my players to win it because I would know what the effect would be.
“Then, Jorginho is a great person and an excellent player, but in general it is not the most important thing.”
