Atletico Madrid chief, Gil Marin warns Antonine Griezmann after winning Europa League

Atletico Madrid’s chief executive, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, has warned forward, Antoine Griezmann, that he will ‘never enter history’ if he eventually leaves the Spanish club.

Gil Marin stated this after Griezmann assisted Atletico to beat Marseille 3-0 to secure the Europa League trophy in Lyon, France on Wednesday night.

The France international, who scored twice against the Ligue 1 side in the Europa League final, has been linked with a move from the Los Rojiblancos.

Manchester United chased Griezmann for much of last year, while Barcelona has emerged as the 27-year-old’s most likely destination this summer.

Gil Marin, however, believes Griezmann will regret a move elsewhere.

“It will depend on his feelings more than anything else,” he told reporters after the game.

“If he wants to make history at Atletico Madrid where everything revolves around him, or go to a club where he will never enter history.

“If he decides that he does not want to continue with us, we have to respect his decision.

“I am not optimistic or pessimistic. I do not know what will happen, it is not a decision for him to say after the final,” Gil Marin said.

Meanwhile, Griezmann has 29 goals and 15 assists in 48 appearances for Atletico this season.

The forward will, however, demand a hefty transfer fee, with Atletico set to collect upwards of £100 million.
