The ‘APC Integrity Caucus,’ a coalition of stakeholders in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed concern over what it describes as a desperate attempt by opposition parties to seize control of Kano and the entire North West Zone from the APC. The caucus, which includes members from the National Assembly and business community, argues that the Northwest, which contributed the most votes to President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, deserves compensation.
During a news conference in Abuja on Monday, the caucus addressed the ongoing calls from opposition parties, particularly the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), for the APC leadership not to zone the Senate Presidency to the North West. They claim that this call is part of a broader plan to deny the zone a powerful government position, allowing them to expand membership and ultimately gain control of Kano and the entire zone in 2027.
Hon. Musa Ahmed Jauro Dutse, the group’s spokesperson, stated that the opposition parties’ insistence on the zoning issue is an attempt to mislead Tinubu and other APC leaders into overlooking the North West. He emphasized the need for justice and fairness, urging the zone to be compensated for their support during the Presidential election.
The group advised that since the South West has the Presidency and the North East has the Vice-Presidency, it would be prudent to allow the North West to hold the Senate Presidency. According to the caucus, the North West represents the crux of the Hausa/Fulani people in Nigeria, and the Senate Presidency’s allocation to the region would benefit the entire Hausa/Fulani population.
