What NBC told Nigerian radio, TV stations on World Music Day

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has cautioned broadcasters in Nigeria to avoid disseminating musical videos that portray obscenity, indecency and express vulgar language to their viewers and listeners.

The regulatory body gave warning in a statement released on Friday as part of activities marking the 2019 World Music Day.

It said that June 21st of every year is celebrated as World Music Day, also referred to as Fete de la musique and this year’s theme is ‘Music at the intersections’.

The commission noted that musicians from all gems and ages, amateurs and experienced performers gather together to express themselves through music as music has more benefits than one can comprehend.

“On this day the National Broadcasting Commission again emphasis the need for Broadcasters to adhere strictly to Areas of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code that deals with music and musical contents.

“Section 3.13.2.2 states that for the purpose of free to air terrestrial broadcast: Nigerian music shall constitute 80 percent of all music broadcast, for purposes of royalties, a broadcaster shall maintain an accurate log of every music broadcasts and retain it for at least three months.

“A broadcaster shall exhibit responsibility, good taste and decency in the choice of music, which in any case, shall not contain lewd, profane, indecent or vulgar expressions, professionalism and good judgment shall be employed in the use a musical as a bridge,” it said.

While speaking on musical videos, the NBC charged broadcasters that obscene, indecent, vulgar language, lewd and profane expression, presentation or representation is not allowed.

“Music is a unifying force, hence It can bring together citizens or tear apart society.

“It can mould our youths or destroy their minds. Broadcasters must be cautious,” NBC warned.
