Senator Shehu Sani, Tuesday, accused political actors of undue political intolerance and human rights abuses across the country.
The lawmaker representing Kaduna central also said politicians used violence to achieve their political goals.

Sani made these allegations in Abuja while in audience with a delegation of the EU parliament, led by Josef Weldonholz, vice president, socialist group of the EU parliament.

In his words, “When we talk of human rights in Nigeria, there are many areas of concern but of immediate concern is the lack of political tolerance among many of our political role players, we still have cases of people arrested for their views.

“We still have cases of people detained for their own perspective. We still have security agencies unable to adapt themselves with the reality of what a democratic society symbolises.

“Of concern to us is the rising level of political violence and the desperation on the side of political actors, using violence to be able to achieve their political gains”.

The undaunted lawmaker said the issue of human rights was fundamental to democratic society and, that a country cannot have democracy without respect for the values, spirit and the principles of fundamental human rights.

He added that the only distinctive feature between democracy and dictatorship was respect for fundamental human rights.
He, however, regretted that Nigeria was getting to decades of democratic rule after coming from history of military dictatorship,

“yet, our democratic experience and experiment have not been in compliance with the principles rule of law and human rights.”
In his remarks, Weldonholz who promised to partner with African nations to reinforce the respect of human rights, said stability couldn’t come by violence except by the practice of true democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights.
