NLC speaks on Saturday’s presidential election

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a rancor-free, credible and fair general election as the presidential poll gets underway Saturday.

Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Wabba said that the call became necessary due to recent happenings in some parts of the country, ahead of the election slated for Feb. 16

According to him, the elections should be peaceful, rancor-free and most importantly credible in all its ramifications.

“We cannot have any system in place if there is no peace and stability, so our expectation is that the election must be peaceful.

“I also think everybody should be able to exercise his/her franchise freely,” he said.

Wabba stressed that ensuring credible elections was the only way that democratic culture would be advanced, adding that “we must build on the success of what we have been able to achieve as a country.

“People should also be mindful and be patriotic because we do not have any other country than Nigeria, we should be drumming for peace and not war.

“If there is any chaos, it is the workers, their families and other Nigerians that will suffer the consequences.

“So, we must first have a country before we think of any other development and we must guard Nigeria jealously and we must be patriotic enough to shun all vices that will bring chaos,” he added.

Wabba further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and other stakeholders to ensure peaceful, free, fair and credible elections on Saturday.
