Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Thursday morning

1. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC ) has dragged former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

EFCC filed a 10-count charge against Lawal and five others viz: are Hamidu David Lawal; Sulaiman Abubakar; Apeh John Monday; Rholavision Engineering Limited and Josmon Technologies Limited.

2. Hassan Mijimyawa, the Chief Press Secretary to Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, has been kidnapped.

It was gathered that he was kidnapped on Wednesday along Bali Gashaka road by unknown gunmen.

3. The Court of Appeal has dismissed the motion filed by Justice Walter Onneghen seeking for stay of proceedings of his trial at the CCT

The appeal was filed before the Court of Appeal by his lawyers: Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), Kanu Agabi (SAN) and James Onoja.

4. Four major television stations in the country have been sanctioned by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC for airing hate speech.

The television stations are: Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, African Independent Television, AIT, Channels TV and Television Continental, TVC.

5. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has described as false, report of a bomb scare on an Air Peace aircraft, that took off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja en route Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

FAAN’s spokesperson, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, said the passenger that raised the alarm is said to have a history of mental illness and is presently with security agencies and medical experts for assessment.

6. The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for attacking a church.

Colonel Sagir Musa, Deputy Director Public Relations 82 Division, in a statement on Wednesday, said troops swung into action after a distress call.

7. A Federal High Court sitting in Jalingo Taraba State, on Wednesday, discharged and acquitted Sani Abubakar Danladi, former governor and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Taraba State, of alleged fraud.

Also acquitted were Joel Ikenya, a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, and Mark Bako Useni, former Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly.

8. President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday received the former National Financial Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Bolaji Anani and his supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The President received the defectors at the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Rally inside the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

9. The leadership of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad lll, has said Nigeria had fallen into hard times and required prayers of all Muslims

The JNI Secretary-General, Dr Khalid Aliyu, in a statement issued on behalf of the Sultan, in Abuja cautioned Nigerian politicians against making hate speech ahead of the general elections.

10. Chairman of the Port Harcourt branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Sylvester Adaka was beaten to pulp for leading members of the NBA to disrupt proceedings in the Appellate court.

Adaka was beaten “black and blue” by supposedly anxious litigants whose case was being heard.
