Insecurity: Kano government adopts native authority security system

Following the rising insecurity challenges across major parts of the Northern Nigeria, coupled with kidnapping, banditry and others, the Kano State government has re-strategised by involving traditional institutions to ensure peace in the State.

The new security models, which is more of a native authority strategy, was adopted following an expanded security meeting held between the government and the Emirate Council at the State Africa House, Saturday.

Unveiling the new strategy, the Emir of Kano Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi, said the state included them in the security issues following the critical rise in security challenges in their neighbours.

“You are aware of the critical challenges of security problems in some of our neighbours and a wise man takes precaution before problems befall them”.

The Emir added, “a wise Hausa saying indicates that if you see your neighbour on fire, you quickly quench it with water before it spread to your doorstep”.

However, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi refused to speak on any issue relating to the forthcoming general elections, insisting that, “I will not comment on politics because you should leave that to politicians”.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje brought the expanded security meetings at the Africa House with all the security personnel of DSS, Police, Military and Paramilitary in attendance.

Emir Muhammadu Sanusi has been advocating for the rebuffing of the security networking across the federation in order to curtail challenges facing the nation.

Recent political events where thugs were allowed to display dangerous weapons, which resulted in the killings and maiming of party supporters is another reason the Kano government calls for the expanded security meetings.

Emir Muhammadu Sanusi narrated that in the new concept, village wards, heads, District Heads, Ullamas and the Emirate Council would be involved fully in the protection of their communities.
