{"id":60807,"date":"2018-11-13T00:28:57","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T23:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=60807"},"modified":"2018-11-13T00:31:52","modified_gmt":"2018-11-12T23:31:52","slug":"man-sentenced-to-14-hour-labour-for-stealing-tubers-of-yam-in-lagos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=60807","title":{"rendered":"Man sentenced to 14-hour labour for stealing tubers of yam in Lagos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/court-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">A magistrate court in Ejigbo, Lagos State has sentenced a suspect to 14 hours of community service for stealing three tubers of yam at Ikotun market.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant, 26-year-old Okon Happiness, was reported to have entered a shop in the market owned by one Kehinde Lawanson and took away the yams valued at N2,100.<\/p>\n<p>Luck, however, ran out of him when Lawanson, after seeing him coming out of her shop and out of the market with the items raised alarm.<\/p>\n<p>A mob chased him, caught him and handed him over to the police at Ikotun Division.<\/p>\n<p>Okon was arraigned before the court presided over by Teslimi Shomade on a one-count charge of stealing.<\/p>\n<p>He pleaded guilty to the offence, saying he stole the items because he was hungry.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecuting Counsel, Kenneth Asibor, said the complainant refused all entreaties to settle the matter, insisting that it be charged to court.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant pleaded for leniency, promising not to repeat the act.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrate Shomade convicted him and directed that he should serve his sentence on the court premises.\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A magistrate court in Ejigbo, Lagos State has sentenced a suspect to 14 hours of community service for stealing three tubers of yam at Ikotun market.
