{"id":59333,"date":"2018-11-07T17:33:46","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T16:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=59333"},"modified":"2018-11-07T17:34:38","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T16:34:38","slug":"2019-presidency-us-institute-speaks-on-report-predicting-buhari-as-winner-of-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=59333","title":{"rendered":"2019 presidency: US institute speaks on report predicting Buhari as winner of election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Buhari-at-the-villa.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">The United States Institute of Peace has said it never predicted victory for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general election.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute made the denial in a statement on its website on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was captioned: \u201cCorrecting a Media Error: USIP Makes No Prediction on Nigerian Election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The institute stressed that the report in Nigeria that its 20-page report on risk to a peaceful election in Nigeria, predicted victory for Buhari was false.<\/p>\n<p>The institute, therefore, stressed that the reports were erroneous, insisting that the Institute was non-partisan.<\/p>\n<p>USIP said its only interest in elections was that of preventing violence, not its outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that report emerged in Nigeria claiming that the U.S. Institute of Peace made a prediction that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, will win the 2019 election.<\/p>\n<p>The institute said, \u201cUSIP never makes predictions about election outcomes and has not done so in this case. The Institute\u2019s work on elections is confined to helping nations avoid electoral violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe erroneous news accounts misrepresent USIP\u2019s recent 20-page report on the risks to a peaceful 2019 election in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study is based on interviews across the country with more than 200 Nigerian respondents\u2014election administrators, political party representatives, security officials, civil society and youth groups, the media, traditional and religious leaders, prominent community figures, business people, academics and others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe USIP report noted that, in the interviews, \u2018some respondents\u2019 discussed their own views of Nigerian public perceptions about an election outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Nigerian news account mis-reported this passage as a USIP prediction of the outcome, and other Nigerian news organizations repeated the error.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs USIP is a strictly nonpartisan institution, its work on elections focuses entirely on preventing violence.
