<\/p>\nReigns, a four-time world champion, took the decision because of his ongoing battle with leukaemia.<\/p>\n
The wrestler revealed he was diagnosed with leukaemia when he was just 22 years old and he had been in remission.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I was 22 years old, I was diagnosed with this. And very quickly I was able to put it in remission. But I\u2019m not going to lie, that was the hardest time in my life,\u201d Reigns told WWE\u2019s Monday Night Raw.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t have a job, I didn\u2019t have any money, I didn\u2019t have a home and I had a baby on the way,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Reigns, who once played football, said that the cancer had returned and he will have to step away from the ring.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy real name is Joe and I have been living with leukaemia for 11 years,\u201d Reigns added.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, it is back and because the leukaemia is back I cannot fulfil my role, I can\u2019t be that fighting champion and I\u2019m going to have to relinquish the Universal Championship.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reigns, who leads a 3-man wrestling group, known as The Shield, added before dropping his belt that he was not retiring.<\/p>\n
Before leaving the ring, Reigns assured that he will be back to wrestling soon.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to make one thing clear \u2014 by no means is this a retirement speech,\u201d Reigns said.<\/p>\n
