{"id":422032,"date":"2021-12-15T22:34:45","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T21:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=422032"},"modified":"2021-12-15T22:34:50","modified_gmt":"2021-12-15T21:34:50","slug":"stop-arresting-northern-protesters-amnesty-international-warns-dss-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=422032","title":{"rendered":"Stop Arresting Northern Protesters \u2014Amnesty International Warns DSS, Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A global rights group, Amnesty International, has charged security agencies to stop harassing and arresting Northern youths protesting against insecurity.<br \/>\nFor days, young Northerners have continued to take to the streets to protest against the banditry and kidnapping in the region.<br \/>\n<span class=\"container container-pod container-pod-short\"><span class=\"adunit-parent hide block-module block-module-ad block-module-ad-300x250\"><span class=\"block-module-image-wrapper\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"ds-1col file file-image file-image-jpeg view-mode-embedded centered clearfix block-story-object block-story-object-resource block-story-object-resource-image\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"block-story-object-asset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-embedded\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/Stop-Arresting-Northern-Protesters-\u2014Amnesty-International-Warns-DSS-Police.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This has, however, attracted the outrage of security agencies which arrested and brutalised some of the protesters.<br \/>\nThe protesters who trended hashtags such as: #SaveTheNorth; #NorthernLivesMatter; #NorthIsBleeding; #SecureOurLives; #EnoughIsEnough; and #NoMoreBloodShed, said they were fed up and could no longer fold their hands and watch their people being slaughtered by bandits.<br \/>\nThey demanded an immediate end to the kidnappings and killings ongoing in the region and asked President Muhammadu Buhari to take decisive steps towards halting the gruesome trend.<br \/>\nIn a series of tweets on Wednesday, Amnesty demanded the release of the young protesters.<br \/>\nThe rights group said, \u201cAmnesty International received disturbing reports from Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto and Zaria on arrests and crackdown by the police and the DSS on peaceful protests against rampant insecurity in northern Nigeria.<br \/>\n\u201cWe call on Nigerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all those arrested for exercising the right to freedom of assembly. The DSS must stop using \u2018invitations\u2019 to threaten and intimidate protests organisers.<br \/>\n\u201cThe protesters have done nothing more than speaking up for accountability. The arrests appear to be an attempt to intimidate and harass those who refused to be silent in the face of government\u2019s failure to protect lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"block-story-object block-story-object-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" align=\"center\" data-width=\"550\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We call on Nigerian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all those arrested for exercising the right to freedom of assembly.
