the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jam\u0101&#8217;at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da&#8217;wah wa&#8217;l-Jih\u0101d says 17 Nigerian soldiers were killed during an attack on Askira, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.<br \/>\n<span class=\"container container-pod container-pod-short\"><span class=\"adunit-parent hide block-module block-module-ad block-module-ad-300x250\"><span class=\"block-module-image-wrapper\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SaharaReporters had reported that ISWAP fighters on Saturday engaged Nigerian troops at a military base in the community in a gun battle.<br \/>\n<span class=\"ds-1col file file-image file-image-jpeg view-mode-embedded centered clearfix block-story-object block-story-object-resource block-story-object-resource-image\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"block-story-object-asset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-embedded\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/BREAKING-Again-Buhari-Government-Increases-Prices-Of-Electricity-Meters-Second.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Some civilians had said they sighted the ISWAP fighters in a long convoy of gun trucks along Ngude axis towards Askira.<\/p>\n<p>The civilians added that they reported the movement of the terrorists to security forces but no action was taken before the deadly group stormed Askira town hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after the incident, Director, Army Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu in a statement said a Brigadier General and three other soldiers were killed.<\/p>\n<p>While he identified the slain senior officer as Dzarma Zirkusu, the army spokesperson was silent on the identities of the junior officers killed.<br \/>\n<span class=\"ds-1col block-story-object block-story-object-link block-story-object-link-story\" killed.<\/p>\n<p>According to the group, 13 soldiers were killed when its fighters attacked troops at a military base in Askira town while four others including Brigadier General Zirkus were killed during an ambush at Bulguma, a few kilometres from Askira.<\/p>\n<p>ISWAP added that it razed down the Askira army camp, a four-wheel vehicle and an armoured vehicle parked inside the base.<\/p>\n<p>The militants also said another vehicle, a tank, different weapons, and ammunition were captured during the incident.<br \/>\n<span class=\"ds-1col block-story-object around Lake Chad.<\/p>\n<p>Just recently, it appointed Wali Sani Shuwaram, a 45-year-old as the new leader (Wali) of ISWAP in Lake Chad.<\/p>\n<p>The sect\u2019s membership has swollen with the defection of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters under Shekau.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian army has repeatedly claimed that insurgency had been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses.<\/p>\n<p>The terror group has caused over 50,000 deaths and displaced millions of individuals mainly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe
