{"id":379382,"date":"2021-07-31T18:03:44","date_gmt":"2021-07-31T17:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=379382"},"modified":"2021-07-31T18:08:31","modified_gmt":"2021-07-31T17:08:31","slug":"2023-presidency-you-cant-force-northerners-to-vote-for-southern-president-baba-ahmed-tells-southern-governors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=379382","title":{"rendered":"2023 presidency: You can\u2019t force Northerners to vote for Southern President \u2013 Baba-Ahmed tells Southern Governors"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the National Publicity Secretary of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has told Southern governors that Northerners cannot be forced to vote for a Southern president come 2023 general election.<br \/>\nBaba-Ahmed said that while there is nothing wrong in having a southerner as Nigeria\u2019s President in 2023, those seeking office after President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s eight years in office should work hard to persuade Northerners and other Nigerians to vote for them.<br \/>\nDAILY POST had reported earlier this month the governors from Southern states jointly agreed that its region must produce the next President.<br \/>\n\u201cWe don\u2019t want another tribal or regional president,\u201d Baba-Ahmed told The Nation while reacting to Southern governors\u2019 call for Nigeria\u2019s next President to come from the region.<br \/>\n\u201cYou cannot tie up northern voters completely and totally and say he must not vote for any party that fields a northerner for the position of the President. You need to persuade people, you need to do the hard work of politics.<br \/>\n\u201cPeople who believe that having a southern presidency is central to the survival of this country should in the name of God get up do the real work of lobbying and politicking and persuade people that the future of this country is contingent on the emergence of a southern president.<br \/>\n\u201cBut, you cannot do it by threat, intimidation and blackmail. If you keep pushing this rhetoric that it must be southern President or we will leave this country or the heavens will fall, then northern voters will say, what about my right to choose whoever I want? What do you do with my right? How can you force me to choose a southerner if I have a choice to choose a northerner or southerner?<br \/>\n\u201cThat is the point we have been making.
