{"id":356651,"date":"2021-05-25T21:57:54","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T20:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=356651"},"modified":"2021-05-25T21:58:04","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T20:58:04","slug":"cholera-kills-20-in-northern-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=356651","title":{"rendered":"Cholera kills 20 in northern Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A cholera outbreak in northern Nigeria has killed at least 20 people in the past two weeks with more than 300 hospitalised from the disease, a health official said Tuesday.<br \/>\nNigeria, Africa\u2019s largest oil producer, suffers from a high rate of water-borne diseases as a result of dilapidated infrastructure and under-investment.<br \/>\nThe latest outbreak in Bauchi state was reported in nine districts, with the state capital Bauchi worst hit, Mohammed Maigoro, state health commissioner told reporters.<br \/>\n\u201cSo far we have recorded 20 deaths and 322 cases from the cholera outbreak in nine local government areas in the past two weeks,\u201d Maigoro said.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Bauchi metropolis has been worst affected, accounting for half of the fatalities and 147 out of the 322 reported cases.\u201d<br \/>\nMaigoro said cases were on the increase and the government has asked all the 20 districts in the state to activate their emergency response teams and open cholera quarantine centres.<br \/>\nHealth personnel and drugs were sent to the affected areas while public sensitisation campaigns on water sanitation and personal hygiene have been intensified, he said.<br \/>\nCholera is a water-borne bacterial infection that affects the intestinal track and is characterised by vomiting, watery stool, dehydration and fatigue.<br \/>\nIt can be transmitted by flies when they come in contact with food and can be fatal if not treated in time.<br \/>\nEight states in Nigeria have reported suspected cholera cases this year according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC): Benue, Delta, Zamfara, Gombe, Bayelsa, Kogi, Sokoto and Nasarawa.<br \/>\nA total of 1 746 suspected cases including 50 deaths have been reported in those states since January, with more than half of confirmed cases affecting children between the age of 5 and 14.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float:none; margin:0px;\">\n<div style=\"color:#3E3E3E\">(Today.ng)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A cholera outbreak in northern Nigeria has killed at least 20 people in the past two weeks with more than 300 hospitalised from the disease, a health official said Tuesday.
