{"id":265213,"date":"2020-10-02T16:49:18","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T15:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=265213"},"modified":"2020-10-02T16:50:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-02T15:50:03","slug":"nigerian-lawmaker-reveals-rep-members-get-n9-3m-each-as-monthly-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=265213","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian lawmaker reveals Rep members get N9.3m each as monthly pay"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">A member of the House of Representatives, Simon Karu, has revealed that each legislator in the Green Chamber take home N9.3 million monthly.<\/p>\n<p>Karu represents Kaltungo\/Shongom federal constituency of Gombe State.<\/p>\n<p>PRNigeria quoted him as saying the money covers monthly salary and office-running.<\/p>\n<p>Karu spoke on Thursday in Abuja at an event to mark Nigeria\u2019s 60th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>It was on the theme: \u201cFixing Nigeria at 60 \u2013 Sustainable and efficient democracy: Issues on accountability and transparency in governance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker stated that constituents\u2019 high demand causes high spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe official salary of a member of the House of Representatives, which I also receive monthly, is N800,0000. The office-running cost of a member of the House of Representatives is N8.5million. Those of you who know, know that I said exactly what it is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is what the constituents demand. When you don\u2019t meet, they call you names. Just before I walked to the stage, I received three emails from my constituents demanding money, jobs. When you don\u2019t (meet demands), it becomes an issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But another serving lawmaker and Chairman, House Committee on Treaties, Osai Osai, told the audience to disregard the information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never received such a salary since I came to the National Assembly and I have been in the National Assembly before him (Karu)\u201d, he declared.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, former Senator, Dino Melaye, said citizens need to reboot Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you get the fight against corruption right, every other thing will be fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kogi-born politician advocated the establishment of a National Budget Office.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed confidence that this would tackle the problem of budget padding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a National Budget Office; Nigeria is the only country without such an office.
