{"id":252233,"date":"2020-08-28T21:52:48","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T20:52:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=252233"},"modified":"2020-08-28T21:55:58","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T20:55:58","slug":"ten-killed-four-injured-as-lightning-strikes-children-playing-football","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=252233","title":{"rendered":"Ten killed, four injured as lightning strikes children playing football"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">Ten children have been confirmed dead while four others have been seriously injured after lightning struck them while sheltering from a storm during a football game in northern Uganda, on Friday.<br \/>\nAccording to police spokeswoman, Josephine Angucia, the boys, aged 11 to 16, had been sheltering from a storm in a makeshift structure in Arua city, northwest of the capital Kampala on Thursday before the incident happened.<br \/>\nAngucia said young boys had been playing football when it began to rain and lightning struck them.<br \/>\nShe also said four other children were seriously injured on the incident.<br \/>\n\u201cThe children, were sheltering from the rain in a grass-thatched house when the lightning struck Thursday evening.<br \/>\n\u201cThey had been playing soccer in a nearby field.\u201d Four other children were injured.<br \/>\n\u201cRelatives have been picking up the bodies from the mortuary since yesterday and the burials are taking place from today,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nShe further explained that deadly lightning is commonly reported in the East African country during the wet seasons, while urging children to avoid playing in the rain.<br \/>\n\u201cThe football pitches are usually within or near schools.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s advisable for schools to fix lightning arrestors so that we offer protection to our children,\u201d she added\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ten children have been confirmed dead while four others have been seriously injured after lightning struck them while sheltering from a storm during a football game in northern Uganda, on Friday.
