Data points for each student were then put through a statistical model, including the school&#8217;s previous performance.<\/p>\n<p>But many students claim their prospects were ruined and university offers missed due to an <strong>&#8220;unfair&#8221; although slightly exceeded last year&#8217;s cohort, prompting education minister Dr Susanne Eisenmann to praise students for passing the &#8220;fair&#8221; but &#8220;demanding&#8221; exams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students in Italy did not have to take written tests but instead underwent hour-long oral exams.<\/p>\n<p>Italian schools have been closed since 5 March as the country was hit by a rapid increase in coronavirus infections, spurring a national lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>Classes are not expected to start up again until October, but the Italian government decided classrooms could be used for high school students to take their final oral exams in person.<\/p>\n<p>Students had five oral exams a day with one hour allotted for each and a 15-minute break between each one so the area could be sanitised.<\/p>\n<p><strong>France<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On 3 April, French authorities announced the school-leaving baccalaureate exams would not go ahead for the first time in history.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, students were awarded an average grade for each subject based on their performance in the first two terms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\" itemprop=\"associatedMedia image\" itemscope itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/20\/08\/768x432\/skynews-france-school-college_5069929.jpg?20200817132504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/20\/08\/384x216\/skynews-france-school-college_5069929.jpg?20200817132504 380w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/20\/08\/768x432\/skynews-france-school-college_5069929.jpg?20200817132504 760w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/20\/08\/1600x900\/skynews-france-school-college_5069929.jpg?20200817132504 1024w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/20\/08\/2048x1152\/skynews-france-school-college_5069929.jpg?20200817132504 2048w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw\" alt=\"French college students return to school in Nantes\"><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"sdc-article-image__caption\" itemprop=\"caption description\">\n<span class=\"sdc-article-image__visually-hidden\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"sdc-article-image__caption-text\">French college students return to school in Nantes<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Local juries also assessed the grades, taking into account national average, schools&#8217; past examination records and the student&#8217;s attendance.<\/p>\n<p>The pass rate was more than 95% &#8211; an increase of seven percentage points on last year &#8211; and universities were forced to create an extra 10,000 places for September in the most popular subject areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Netherlands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students in the Netherlands were assessed on the results of their school exams, which secondary schools conduct themselves.<\/p>\n<p>They did not have to take their final central exams and were also allowed to retake failed exams.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, schools saw a surge in the number of final-year students passing their diplomas.<\/p>\n<p>A third of secondary schools reported that all of their pupils had graduated &#8211;
