{"id":198322,"date":"2020-03-03T09:57:10","date_gmt":"2020-03-03T08:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=198322"},"modified":"2020-03-03T09:57:36","modified_gmt":"2020-03-03T08:57:36","slug":"guinea-bissaus-president-resigns-after-24-hours-in-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=198322","title":{"rendered":"Guinea Bissau&#8217;s President resigns after 24 hours in office"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">Guinea Bissau\u2019s rival president, Mr Cipriano Cassam\u00e1, has resigned after just one day in office.<\/p>\n<p>Before this development, Guinea Bissau had two presidents.<\/p>\n<p>Cipriano Cassam\u00e1 was chosen by lawmakers as president following disputed elections in December.<\/p>\n<p>This was despite the fact that former army general, Umaro Cissoko Embal\u00f3 had already been sworn in as president at a hotel in the capital, Bissau.<\/p>\n<p>According to BBC, outgoing President Jos\u00e9 M\u00e1rio Vaz handed power to Mr Embal\u00f3 at a ceremony at a luxury hotel on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Pereira\u2019s PAIGC party, which led Guinea-Bissau to independence rejected Mr Embal\u00f3\u2019s inauguration, describing the election as marred by fraud.<\/p>\n<p>The party then used its parliamentary majority to swear in Mr Cassam\u00e1, the parliamentary speaker, as interim president, until the Supreme Court ruled on its bid to annul Mr Embal\u00f3\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n<p>Giving reasons for his resignation, Mr Cassama said he stepped down due to death threats,<\/p>\n<p>He added that his life is in danger, and he has no security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no security, my life is in danger, the life of my family is in danger, the life of this people is in danger.
