{"id":174983,"date":"2019-12-10T23:14:23","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T21:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=174983"},"modified":"2019-12-10T22:16:50","modified_gmt":"2019-12-10T21:16:50","slug":"two-former-algerian-prime-ministers-jailed-for-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=174983","title":{"rendered":"Two former Algerian Prime Ministers jailed for corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ds-1col file file-image file-image-jpeg view-mode-embedded centered clearfix block-story-object block-story-object-resource block-story-object-resource-image\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"block-story-object-asset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-embedded\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/storage\/2019\/12\/Algeria-Jails-Two-Former-Prime-Ministers-For-Corruption.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-temp-aztec-id=\"e3c63437-6725-4c11-a781-d83a25b75f86\"><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An Algerian court has sentenced two former prime ministers of the country to long jail terms amid a huge corruption investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Ouyahia was sentenced to 15 years in prison and Abdelmalek Sellal to 12 years, the BBC reports.<\/p>\n<p>They were accused of abusing authority in a car manufacturing embezzlement scandal.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time since Algeria&#8217;s independence from France in 1962 that ex-prime ministers were put on trial.<\/p>\n<p>The two were allies of long-time President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who resigned amid mass protests in April.<\/p>\n<p>Ouyahia and Sellal were among 19 defendants tried on charges of money laundering, abuse of office, and granting undue privileges in the vehicle assembly industry.<\/p>\n<p>One serving cabinet minister, Abdesalem Bouchoureb, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in absentia.<\/p>\n<p>An international arrest warrant has been issued for him amid reports that he is abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Defence lawyers boycotted the trial, alleging that the proceedings were &#8220;politicised&#8221; and aimed at &#8220;settling scores&#8221;, AFP reports.<\/p>\n<p>The convicted men however, have 10 days to appeal against the sentence.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Algerian court has sentenced two former prime ministers of the country to long jail terms amid a huge corruption investigation.
