{"id":171170,"date":"2019-11-28T00:56:08","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T22:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=171170"},"modified":"2019-11-27T23:57:29","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T22:57:29","slug":"states-asked-to-scrap-life-pension-for-governors-speakers-deputies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=171170","title":{"rendered":"States asked to scrap life pension for governors, speakers, deputies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/storage\/2019\/11\/States-asked-to-scrap-life-pension-for-governors-speakers-deputies.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has commended Zamfara House of Assembly for abolishing \u2018despicable\u2019 life pension law in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The body encouraged other states with similar laws to also scrap such benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director of CISLAC said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Rafsanjani said that payment of pension and other entitlements to former governors, their deputies and former speakers and their deputies, was a way of siphoning public treasury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate constructive legislative process that repealed the contemptible law in the state assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis fruitful legislative action is a declaration of readiness for people-oriented legislative process, which if sustained, will positively transform the state\u2019s socio-economic and political spheres,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rafsanjani decried the alarming recurrent expenditures with resultant high cost of governance that backpedals development of critical sectors in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany states are caught in ill-thought efforts to needlessly legalise increased pensions and remunerations for retired public officer holders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerians are not unaware of the unjustified political intentions with deliberate effort to siphon public treasury through which the law emerged across the states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is in spite of numerous jumbo salaries, allowances, benefits, and public paid expenses enjoyed by the governors, their deputies, former speaker and their deputies throughout and after their tenures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes the states that erected private buildings as retirement packages for the public office holders as well as former governors who enjoy double payments from senatorial positions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are worried that the increasing clamours for life-time pension and benefits accrued to public office holders across the states constitutes a major sabotage to effective and efficient governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHence exacerbating electoral violence and discrediting electoral process,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also urged Nigerians to demand strict compliance with entitlements prescribed by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission in all remuneration and entitlements at all levels.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has commended Zamfara House of Assembly for abolishing \u2018despicable\u2019 life pension law in the state.
