{"id":166854,"date":"2019-11-11T11:32:54","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T10:32:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=166854"},"modified":"2019-11-11T11:33:15","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T10:33:15","slug":"epl-clattenburg-reveals-why-oliver-var-didnt-award-man-city-penalty-in-3-1-loss-to-liverpool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=166854","title":{"rendered":"EPL: Clattenburg reveals why Oliver, VAR didn&#8217;t award Man City penalty in 3-1 loss to Liverpool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/EPL-Clattenburg-reveals-why-Oliver-VAR-didnt-award-Man-City-penalty-in-3-1-loss-to-Liverpool.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">Former Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg, has explained why referee and Video Assistant Referee (VAR), did not award Manchester City a penalty for handball, during their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before the Reds took the lead through Fabinho, the ball appeared to strike Trent Alexander-Arnold\u2019s arm, but Oliver waved on play.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane scored further, as Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the table.<\/p>\n<p>Clattenburg told SportsMail: \u201cVAR and Michael Oliver made the correct call in allowing Fabinho\u2019s early goal to stand, although I disagree with the reasoning the Premier League have provided.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were strong suggestions at the time that the effort should be disallowed and a penalty awarded to Manchester City because Trent Alexander-Arnold had handled at the other end moments before the goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, it is the arm of Manchester City forward Bernardo Silva that deflects the ball onto Alexander-Arnold and that is why, for me, play should not be brought back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Silva\u2019s arm does not divert the ball, then yes, I believe a penalty should have been awarded as Alexander-Arnold\u2019s arm is in an unnatural position and he is using it to make himself bigger.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg, has explained why referee and Video Assistant Referee (VAR), did not award Manchester City a penalty for handball, during their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
