Cristiano Ronaldo\u2019s mother, Dolores Aveiro, has blamed a \u201cfootball mafia\u201d for her son\u2019s failure to win the Ballon D\u2019Or.<\/p>\n

Ronaldo is currently level on five Ballon D\u2019Or prizes with long-term rival, Lionel Messi.<\/p>\n

However, the Portugal captain was denied a sixth trophy last year, when he finished second to ex-Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a mafia. That\u2019s the right word to define it. Yes, there is a mafia in football,\u201d Dolores told the Portuguese press.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there wasn\u2019t a football mafia, my son would have more [individual] international trophies. If you see everything that happened, you will realise that it is the mafia.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he was Spanish or English they would not do what they did to him. But since he\u2019s Portuguese and from Madeira\u2026 well, this happens.\u201d<\/p>\n
