{"id":161231,"date":"2019-10-18T15:32:19","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T14:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=161231"},"modified":"2019-10-18T15:32:47","modified_gmt":"2019-10-18T14:32:47","slug":"onitsha-fire-oby-ezekwesili-aisha-yesufu-blame-incident-on-negligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=161231","title":{"rendered":"Onitsha Fire: Oby Ezekwesili, Aisha Yesufu Blame Incident On Negligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span class=\"ds-1col file file-image file-image-jpeg view-mode-embedded centered clearfix block-story-object block-story-object-resource block-story-object-resource-image\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"block-story-object-asset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-embedded\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Onitsha-Fire-Oby-Ezekwesili-Aisha-Yesufu-Blame-Incident-On-Negligence.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"container container-pod container-pod-short\"><span class=\"adunit-parent hide block-module block-module-ad block-module-ad-300x250\"><span class=\"block-module-image-wrapper\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, and activist, Aisha Yesufu, both blamed Wednesday\u2019s petrol tanker fire in Onitsha, Anambra State, on negligence on the part of government.<\/p>\n<p>The two outspoken women, who are co-conveners of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, took to their Twitter pages to express their thoughts on the tragedy on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Ezekwesili said, \u201cThere\u2019s no escaping the consequences of poor governance no matter what any of us as citizens choose to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy heart has been grieving at the utterly preventable tragedy of the #OnitshaFire and how families have lost lives and livelihood just because the basics were not available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can an old city like Onitsha with a history of fire outbreaks not have a basic emergency and disaster response system?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow woeful it is that episodes like this occur over and over again and all we do is feel sad for a few days and move on, leaving the victims to their fate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her own reaction, Yesufu said, \u201cOur fellow citizens died in an accident that could have been prevented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are dead and will not die again. The next to be killed by the incompetence of government are those of us who are alive. Who&#8217;s next? Think deeply about that.
