{"id":153396,"date":"2019-09-18T21:03:30","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=153396"},"modified":"2019-09-18T21:05:10","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:05:10","slug":"buhari-govt-under-fire-as-security-operatives-raid-sahara-reporters-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=153396","title":{"rendered":"Buhari govt under fire as security operatives raid Sahara Reporters&#8217; office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ministerial-appointments-Buhari-under-fire-for-excluding-youths-from-43-nominee-list.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Nigerian government to immediately lift the siege to the offices of Sahara Reporters and Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR).<\/p>\n<p>It called for an end to the illegality and allow journalists, activists and civil society to operate freely.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Wednesday by SERAP Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization advised Nigeria\u2019s security agents to stop harassing journalists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attack on Sahara Reporters and CDHR is coming on the heels of staggering crackdown on critics, journalists and activists by many state governors\u201d, it said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal authorities and many state governors are targeting journalists, critics and activists, in clear violation of Nigeria\u2019s constitution of 1999 (as amended), and international obligations, as a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to requiring the authorities to respect fundamental rights and the rules of law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese attacks are clearly aimed at silencing the kind of journalism and investigative reporting that makes federal and state governments uncomfortable. President Muhammadu Buhari now needs to make clear that he doesn\u2019t want any part of this kind of behaviour and that unacceptable and dangerous threats and attacks against journalists, protesters and activists will be fully investigated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe international community including the African Union, the UN human rights special mechanisms and Treaties Bodies, the African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights as well as Nigeria\u2019s international partners can and should push for an end to the escalating crackdown on journalists, bloggers and activists, and for investigations and prosecutions of those responsible for the intimidation, harassment and attacks.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Nigerian government to immediately lift the siege to the offices of Sahara Reporters and Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR).
