{"id":150135,"date":"2019-09-07T10:13:19","date_gmt":"2019-09-07T09:13:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=150135"},"modified":"2019-09-07T10:15:36","modified_gmt":"2019-09-07T09:15:36","slug":"xenophobia-caused-by-south-africas-failed-legal-system-says-ubani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=150135","title":{"rendered":"Xenophobia Caused By South Africa\u2019s Failed Legal System, Says Ubani"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span class=\"ds-1col file file-image file-image-png view-mode-embedded centered clearfix block-story-object block-story-object-resource block-story-object-resource-image\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"block-story-object-asset\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-embedded\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1559918326_10_Gbajabiamila-What-Nigerian-Lawyers-Say-About-His-Fraud-Case-Speakership-Ambition.png\" alt=\"\"><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"container container-pod container-pod-short\"><span class=\"adunit-parent hide block-module block-module-ad block-module-ad-300x250\"><span class=\"block-module-image-wrapper\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A former Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Monday Ubani, has blamed the flawed system of South Africa\u2019s legal structure for the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants in that country.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with SaharaReporters on Friday, Ubani said that the South African Government had no reason to use the allegation of Nigerians being criminals and drug dealers as cover for the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cYou are relying on the failure of your system to punish people by killing them illegally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhereas your legal system could have gotten those who are guilty, who are liable, to be arrested and prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a failure of the system if you say Nigerians are guilty, are criminals and drug dealers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see no reason why the South African Government should advance that kind of reason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system is supposed to be able to get those who are criminals arrested and prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking further, Ubani described calls by members of the ruling All Progressive Congress for the Nigerian Government to take over South African businesses as an extreme measure.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cThat can only be done by the military, not under civilian rule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are terms and conditions under which people come to invest in your country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot set aside all those and begin to acquire other peoples\u2019 businesses contrary to international best practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to be careful not to do the same things we are accusing them of by engaging in retaliatory attacks on their businesses here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the businesses are run by Nigerians even though South Africans have some level of shares in them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all angry but should have a limit to our anger, so that they don\u2019t begin to see us as barbarians.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Monday Ubani, has blamed the flawed system of South Africa\u2019s legal structure for the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants in that country.
