{"id":129425,"date":"2019-06-23T22:58:46","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T21:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=129425"},"modified":"2019-06-23T23:00:14","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T22:00:14","slug":"ethiopia-atiku-reacts-to-killing-of-army-chief-in-attempted-coup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=129425","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopia: Atiku reacts to killing of Army Chief in attempted coup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Ethiopia-Atiku-reacts-to-killing-of-Army-Chief-in-attempted-coup.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">Atiku Abubakar, 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has reacted to the attempted coup against the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>DAILY POST had reported that the Chief of staff of the Ethiopian Army, Seare Mekonnen was shot dead in an attempted coup plot.<\/p>\n<p>Mekonnen was killed by his own bodyguard in Addis Ababa, the capital of the East African nation.<\/p>\n<p>The Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, while confirming the death, said: \u201cMekonnen and another officer died trying to prevent a coup attempt in Amhara region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe regional governor of Amhara, Ambachew Mekonnen, and an adviser was also killed in a separate attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development, Atiku, in a tweet on his official Twitter page, condemned the coup attempt.<\/p>\n<p>He tweeted, \u201cThe coup attempt against the democratically elected government of @PMEthiopia stands condemned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocracy has come to stay in Africa and we must accept this. As a Democrat, my right hand of fellowship is offered to the people of Ethiopia.
