{"id":125894,"date":"2019-06-12T10:26:13","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T09:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=125894"},"modified":"2019-06-12T10:43:01","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T09:43:01","slug":"champions-league-clubs-urge-uefa-to-make-changes-to-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=125894","title":{"rendered":"Champions League: Clubs urge UEFA to make changes to competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailypost.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Henderson-lifts-UCL-2019-1.jpg\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">European clubs will urge UEFA to make a huge change to the Champions League, to avoid it becoming a mainly closed competition, the UK Times reports.<\/p>\n<p>If accepted, the new proposal could see the existing 32-team competition expand, to include either 40 or 48 teams in the group stages from 2024.<\/p>\n<p>This could mean each team play eight group stage games, as opposed to the current six.<\/p>\n<p>A 40-team tournament could feature eight groups of five teams playing eight group matches each, with two from each group then progressing to the last-16 stage as they do now.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively if UEFA don\u2019t agree to that plan, a 48-team competition could feature eight groups of six teams each, potentially producing 10 group games a season.<\/p>\n<p>The proposals are set to be put forward to UEFA at a summit of clubs on September 11, shortly before the 2019\/2020 Champions League season begins.\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>European clubs will urge UEFA to make a huge change to the Champions League, to avoid it becoming a mainly closed competition, the UK Times reports.
