{"id":112097,"date":"2019-04-29T20:08:58","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T19:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=112097"},"modified":"2019-04-29T20:09:10","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T19:09:10","slug":"nis-commences-issuance-of-new-10-year-validity-passport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=112097","title":{"rendered":"NIS commences issuance of new 10-year validity passport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/NIS-commences-issuance-of-new-10-year-validity-passport.png\" data-temp-aztec-id=\"3512a43e-b29a-41cb-916a-4a6be6f25784\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) on Monday, commenced issuance of the new 10-year validity enhanced passport booklet, which is part of a comprehensive reform, approved by the Federal Government in January.<\/p>\n<p>Comptroller-General of the Service, Mr Muhammad Babandede, said this at the ceremony held at the NIS Headquarters, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari, had on Jan. 16, officially launched the new e-passport.<\/p>\n<p>The 64-page 10-year standard passport costs N70, 000, while the 32-page five-year standard passport costs N25, 000. The 64-page five-year standard passport goes for N 35,000, while the 32-page five-year official passport costs N15, 000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new passport has enormous advantages which include 10 year validity, self-tracking application and express centers, for urgent application.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther advantages include weather friendliness, compliance with latest International Civil Aviation Organization (CIAO) standard, poly-carbonate technology that reduces incidence of damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also save Nigerians in Diaspora time, in hitherto frequent visits to Nigerian Embassies for the document,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Babandede who said that the passport was integrated with the National Identity Number (NIN), added that the headquarters would issue the new passport booklet for now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the service will continue to issue the old booklet in all passport offices at the state commands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the Passport Office Gwagwalada continues to issue the old passport for now pending the roll out, at other centres including Ikoyi, Alausa, Kano and London,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He further advised Nigerians not to rush for the new booklet, as the new passport would run concurrently with the old one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApplicants holding a passport with more than six months validity are not eligible for the new booklet, except in the case of damage, change of data and those whose passport booklets are exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApplicants are equally advised to pay online or directly to the banks situated within the passport offices,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Comptroller Passport, Mrs Edith Onyemenam said that the passport office had worked tirelessly to ensure that the roll out was a huge success.<\/p>\n<p>She said that applicants are expected to go online and make payments before processing the application.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not relenting over the policy of government which says \u2018No NIN No Passport\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are partnering with National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), to ensure applicants have their NIN before registration,\u201d She said.<\/p>\n<p>NIS Public Relations\u2019 Officer, Mr Sunday James, noted that there are 12 enrollment points for the new passport booklet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes each applicant just 2 minutes to be captured. But firstly, we have to confirm tha information given by them are accurate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach work station can capture 60 applicants.
