{"id":108103,"date":"2019-04-17T16:36:04","date_gmt":"2019-04-17T15:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=108103"},"modified":"2019-04-17T16:36:18","modified_gmt":"2019-04-17T15:36:18","slug":"nigeria-election-inec-reveals-real-reason-borders-are-closed-during-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arewa.ng\/?p=108103","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria election: INEC reveals real reason borders are closed during polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/arewa.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/What-INEC-must-do-to-ensure-credible-successful-elections-in-2023-\u2013-Stakeholders.png\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday identified lack of trust among Nigerians as the major reason for the closure of the nation\u2019s borders during elections.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Osareti Imahiyereobo, INEC\u2019s Head of Voters Education and Publicity in Plateau State, made this disclosure in his goodwill message during a Town Hall Meeting organised by Search For Common Ground, a Non-Governmental Organisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe closure of all our borders has greatly affected the economic growth of the nation as all businesses are also always on standstill till after elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis very action is mainly due to the lack of trust among us Nigerians and which is not good for us as a nation given its negative effects on our economy because businesses are always closed down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some other nations like Zambia, borders and business premises are left open while some sensitive materials like ballot papers are always sent out to voters week before elections and their elections were not affected in any way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dBut that kind of trust and understanding can\u2019t happen here because we as Nigerians do not trust ourselves,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The INEC official also called on residents of Plateau to accept in good faith whatever may be the outcome at being Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is need for us to support those who have been elected to represent us at whatever level and capacity so that we can enjoy the dividends of democracy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Mrs Niri Goyit, the Project Coordinator for Search for Common Ground, had said that the purpose for the town hall meeting was to give room for stakeholders to assess the general elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so happy that the civil society groups, including journalists, collaborated with us on the education and sensitisation of voters and politicians on the need for peaceful conduct before, during and after the elections,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Goyit said that the town hall meeting was aimed at sifting the views of stakeholders on the conduct of politicians, voters, security operatives and INEC so as to come out with a communique that would help chart a new course for the conduct of elections in Nigeria.\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday identified lack of trust among Nigerians as the major reason for the closure of the nation\u2019s borders during elections.
