A truck driver allegedly crushed a pregnant woman and an unnamed man to death at about 4pm, along Jabi/Airport Road, Abuja on Thursday.

Punch reports that the deceased persons were attempting to board a taxi by the side of the road when the truck rammed into them and dragged them into the gutter.

An eyewitness, Musa Abdullahi, narrated that the truck, which was conveying granite, lost control before crushing its victims.

Addullahi said, “The accident occurred around 4pm. The truck was driving towards the airport road but lost control. Instead of swerving towards the right which would have led to no casualties, he swerved towards oncoming traffic.

“A pregnant woman who was trying to board a green cab along with a man were hit by the truck. The truck rammed into the taxi and they all fell into a gutter. The pregnant woman and the man died on the spot while the taxi driver was injured.

“The driver of the truck and his motor boy (assistant) immediately fled the scene.’’

An FRSC official also stated that it was likely that the truck experienced a brake failure but it was too soon to know the exact cause.

The Corps Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, confirmed the incident.

Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps and emergency officials were said to have conveyed the corpses to the mortuary.
