Kinsmen remanded in prison for alleged kidnap of 3 victims in Ebonyi

A 23-year-old man, one Onuabuchi Orime, and three others were on Thursday remanded in prison custody for allegedly kidnapping three persons.

The victims, Oliver Ojima, Ekpe Ozoko and Ekpe Peter were said to have been kidnapped by the suspects who made unnecessary demands, but luck ran of them and they were apprehended by the police.

It was gathered that the suspects hail from Ukwuagba-Ngbo community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state.

The suspects were arraigned before a magistrates’ Court sitting in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state, on a four-count charges bordering on kidnapping, felony, and conspiracy.

It was alleged that the accused persons and others now at large committed the offences on November 3, 2019, at the Ukwuagba-Ngbo community in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

The police prosecutor, ASP Mathias Eze, told the court that the offences were punishable under sections 516A (a) and 4 (1) (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap 33 Vol. 1; and Cap 55 Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

The charges read, “That you, Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idienyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791C/2019, MAC/24C/2020 and others now at large, on the 3rd day of November, 2019, at Ukwuagba Ngbo, in the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit; kidnapping, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 516A (a) of the Criminal Code Cap 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

“That you Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idenyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791C/2019, MAB/24C/2020 and others now at large, on the same date and place in the aforesaid Magisterial District did unlawfully kidnap of one Oliver Ojima ‘m’ and thereby committed an offense contrary to section 4(1) (a) and punishable under section 4 (2) of the Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and other related matters Laws Cap. 55, Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

“That you Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idenyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791/2019, MAB/24C/2020; others in MAB/791C/2019 and MAB/89C/2019 and others now at large, on the same date and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District did unlawfully kidnap of one Ekpe Joseph Ozoko ‘m’ and thereby committed an offense contrary to section 4 (1) (a) and punishable under section 4 (2) of Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and other related matters Laws, Cap. 55, Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

“That you Onuabuchi Orime ‘m’, Okposi Mathias ‘m’, Idenyi Chijioke ‘m’, Akota Goodwin ‘m’, others in MAB/791C/2019, MAB/24C/2020 and others now at large, on the same and place, in the aforementioned Magisterial District did unlawfully kidnap of one Ekpe Peter ‘m’ and thereby committed an offense contrary to section 4 (1) (a) and punishable under section 4 (2) of Ebonyi State Internal Security Enforcement and other related matters Laws, Cap. 55, Vol. 2, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Nnenna Onuoha, directed that the accused persons be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, and their case file transferred to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the state for advice.

However, the matter was adjourned till January 29, 2020, for report of compliance.
