Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the federal Government’s ban on the production of Codeine containing syrups in Nigeria.

DAILY POST reports that the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, on Tuesday directed the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.

Adewole said the directive became necessary due to the gross abuse of Codeine usage in the country.

However, reacting, the wife of the president, while commending the development called on relevant stakeholders to tackle the rising cases of drug abuse among youths in Nigeria.

”Very welcome development by the Federal Government, Ministry of Health, NAFDAC and Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

”Gradually and collectively we will put an end to the menace of drug abuse in Nigeria, lets save the lives of our youths and that of the next generation.

” I have noted with alarm the exponential rise of drug abuse in our country, especially in the North.

” As a parent, I am deeply saddened by this fact, it is important that we interrupt the trend and encourage our children to stay drug-free.”
