Africa’s only female president, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim finally resigns

Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim has resigned.

She resigned on Saturday, her lawyer said.

Gurib-Fakim, Africa’s only female head of state, submitted her resignation in the “national interest,” her lawyer Yousouf Mohamed told reporters, adding that it would take effect on March 2.

The Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, had said Gurib-Fakim would resign after she was accused of using a credit card issued by an international Non-Governmental Organisation to buy clothes and jewellery.
